Preparation For Colonoscopy

It is very important that you read these instructions carefully.

In order for your colonoscopy to be successful the bowel must be thoroughly cleansed so that a clear view can be obtained. By doing this properly it is much less likely that any problems inside your bowel could be missed due to the bowel being obscured by bowel motion. A less than satisfactory preparation can lead to the procedure being abandoned on the day and needing to rebook for another day. Following a successful cleanse, you should find that you are passing only small amounts of clear yellowy, brownish fluid and no solids.

One Week Prior To Colonoscopy

  • Stop iron tablets or supplements
  • Follow your instructions from Dr Hamer in regards to stopping your blood thinning medication ( eg Aspirin, Warfarin, Plavix, Iscover, etc)

Three Days Prior To Your Procedure

  • DON'T eat cereals, brown/multigrain bread, vegetables, nuts and seeds including food containing seeds
  • AVOID  alcohol
  • DO EAT : eggs, steamed fish, chicken, cottage cheese, plain yoghurt, vanilla ice cream, white bread, white pasta, white rice, well cooked potato, milk, clear fruit juices (apple and pear)
  • DO DRINK at least 2-3 litres of clear fluids (see box on next page)

Clear Fluids Only As Follows

FOR COLONOSCOPY AFTER 11AM

  • 3pm dose: stir the entire contents of one sachet of Picoprep into a glass of warm water (about 250 mls) until dissolved. Drink it slowly, followed by a glass of water.
  • 6pm dose: start to drink the previously prepared Glycoprep, drinking a glass every fifteen minutes to finish it over a one-hour period. This rate can be slowed if you have any nausea. Continue to drink clear fluids until you go to bed and during the night.
  • 7am the day of procedure: mix the remaining Picoprep scahet into a glass of water and drink slowly, following the instructions for the first sachet. After 8am it is very important that you have nothing to eat or drink before the colonoscopy.

This preparation is designed to give you watery diarrhoea. Your bowel motions will become clearer and clearer and will eventually look like urine, yellow water or beer.

When you have completed your preparation for your examination it is important to follow the above instructions carefully. Remember your STOP CLEAR FLUIDS TIME as this is important for your procedure to be successful.
